The Dinosaur Geopark in Hațeg Country
The Dinosaur Geopark in Hațeg Country is a protected area of over 102,300 hectares, home to several geological sites that contain dinosaur remains from the Late Cretaceous period. Over 60 million years ago, the Hațeg area was one of the most populated regions in this part of the world, featuring a tropical island in the middle of the Tethys Ocean.
Unique Discoveries
This is how it happens that in this area, the remains of unique dinosaurs in the world have been found:
- The dwarf dinosaurs from the Hațeg Depression
- The flying reptiles Hatzegopteryx
The geopark was declared a protected area of national interest in 2004 and has been part of the UNESCO network since 2005.
Accessing the Geopark
Access to this protected area is somewhat more challenging, but it can be reached either from:
- Caransebeș via DN68
- Petroșani and Târgu Jiu via DN66
