The First Romanian School in Șchei

Few know that the first school where courses were taught in Romanian is located in Șchei, the oldest Romanian neighborhood in Brașov. The first Romanian language classes took place here as early as 1583, but the current building is somewhat newer, having been constructed in the mid-18th century, in 1760.

Museum Highlights

The museum includes several rooms, among which perhaps the most important is the "Anton Pann" Hall, where visitors can find a set of benches and school chairs mentioned in the writer's stories. This hall is part of the old school building, which is known to have been constructed in 1390. The significance of this school is even greater as it was here that:

  • The first cultural books in Romanian were written
  • The grammar of the Romanian language was established
  • A calendar almanac was created in Romanian literature

Deacon Coresi Hall

Another important room is the "Deacon Coresi" Hall, which houses the printing press that was used to print the first books in Romanian. Between 1556 and 1588, over 40 titles were printed here that remain in the history of Romanian literature.

Valuable Manuscripts

At the museum in Șchei, you can also find some of the most valuable monuments of Romanian literature, such as:

  • Manuscripts over half a millennium old
  • Gilded parchments
  • The first complete Bible translated into Romanian, dating back to 1688

The "First Romanian School" Museum is located at 2-3 Unirii Square in Brașov, and details such as visiting hours can be found at the numbers 0268/511.411 or 0722.435.134.
