The Fortified Church in Cincu

The fortified church in Cincu is considered by many historians to be a unique basilica in Transylvania due to the fact that its defense was only on the western side. Built in the 13th century, the church is located on a hill between the Olt and Hârtibaciu rivers.

Historical Significance

In the past, the church was surrounded by two defensive walls and was protected by five towers that also served as observation points. Unfortunately, today only one of the five towers is still visible, and the defensive walls have dramatically lost height due to erosion.

  • Often, the towers were also used to store supplies during invasions, as well as in winter.

Collections and Artifacts

Despite the passage of time, the church still retains its organ and several valuable collections, such as:

  • A collection of Oriental rugs
  • Emblems of various guilds
  • A chalice from the 15th century
  • Other extremely old ecclesiastical objects

Visiting the Church

To visit this church, you must ask around the village to find the person who has the keys to the place of worship.
