More than ten years have passed since the heir to the British throne visited the first fortress in Transylvania, and this very event has made the fortresses, fortified churches, and traditional houses in this area increasingly attractive to tourists. However, few know that the first fortress visited by Prince Charles was actually in Moșna, a village located eight kilometers away from Mediaș, sheltered from urban congestion and nestled in a region where only tranquility reigns.
The fortress in Moșna is undoubtedly among the most beautiful fortresses in Transylvania, its authenticity preserved despite the over 500 years that have passed since the construction of the church and the defensive walls.
One of the most important parts of the fortress is the Slănina Tower. In the past, each family in the village would hang their cured pork fat from huge hooks here. It was even a competition among the heads of families to boast about the largest *slănină* and the finest pork dishes.
In addition to the main bell of the fortress, which is rung three times a day, a legend speaks of another bell that was only rung when condemned individuals were taken to the gallows. Thus, all the villagers were notified of this event.
Fortunately, the fortress in Moșna is among those that have received funding for restoration. The interior work on the church was nearly completed in 2012, and this year, exterior work is set to begin.
Those wishing to visit this fortress should not hesitate, as you certainly will not regret it. And don’t forget, if you reach Moșna, to visit the organic farm of the Schuster family.
