The Fortress of Orlat and the Legend of the Hidden Gold of the Dacians

The Scurtă Fortress

In Orlat, in Sibiu County, stands a fortress that is said to have been first documented in 1319. This is the Scurtă Fortress, a monument that is wrapped in more legends than the years it has existed.

The Legend of Dacians' Gold

Most of these legends speak of the Dacians' gold. It is said that on the hill behind the fortress, Decebal hid a treasure of immeasurable value that many have tried to find. In the 17th century, explorations were even conducted here by a company from Sebeș, specialized in such works.

Myth or Truth?

The legend gained more credibility after a letter was discovered in the archives in Târgu Mureș, mentioning a treasure found in the Cindrel Mountains. The letter speaks of:

  • A room filled with human skeletons that one had to pass through
  • A chamber containing a statue of Decebal made of solid gold
  • Other extremely valuable objects, as well as silver and precious stones

How true the story is remains unknown, as the gold from Orlat has never been found, at least officially.
