Romanian Ingenuity: The Inclined Plane

A Romanian ingenuity, implemented at the end of the 19th century, is cataloged as one of the most eco-friendly means of industrial transport in the world. The inclined plane, or *Șiclău as it is known by the locals of the Comandău commune in Covasna County, has represented for over 100 years an extremely practical way to transport timber, as well as people, using a train that relies solely on the principle of gravity*.

How It Works

The entire system operates without any other source of energy:

  • Two wagons located on either side of the slope are connected by a metal cable.
  • When the loaded wagon descends, the empty one ascends to the top station.

To allow both wagons to use the same track gauge, there is a branching of the rails in the middle of the installation that enables the simultaneous passage of the two platforms.

Historical Significance and Current Condition

This system was used until 1995, but after that year, it was left to deteriorate. Although it is classified as a historical monument, the condition of the installation is quite poor. Thus, tourists visiting Comandău may be disappointed by the state in which they will find the twisted rails and the installation that has been unused for over 15 years.
