The Bison Reserve Near Hațeg

Just three kilometers from the town of Hațeg, on an area of over 40 hectares, lies the reserve where four of the last European bison live. Taking advantage of the natural ecosystem and the predominantly oak forest, the four bison from the Silvuț Forest, near Hațeg, are the last remaining in the reserve established in 1958.

History of the Bison in the Reserve

Over time, several bison have been brought here from all over Europe, with this area being the first where, following successful breeding, the so-called European bison appeared. The four bison remaining in the Hațeg Country reserve all have names starting with the letters "ro":

  • Romo
  • Romina
  • Roxi
  • Roxana

Visiting the Bison Reserve

Those who wish to reach the Bison Reserve should ensure they have a map with them, as the road is not equipped with signs. Additionally, the three kilometers from the town of Hațeg are unpaved, so a vehicle with a higher ground clearance is necessary.

At one point, you will encounter a massive concrete fence, and beyond it lies the bison reserve.
