The Bridge of Lies in Sibiu
The Bridge of Lies in Sibiu hides four of the most beautiful legends that have circulated in these lands for over 140 years. Built in 1860 to facilitate the access of merchants from the Small Square to Huet Square, the bridge received the German name Liegenbrücke, which means "the lying bridge." The name in German is a homophone with Lügenbrücke, meaning "the bridge of liars," and from there, it was just a step to the emergence of legends.
Legends of the Bridge
Young Lovers
It is said, for example, that this bridge was often crossed by young lovers who swore eternal love to each other. The girls also swore that they were virgins, but after the wedding night, the men would find out that they had actually lied. As punishment, the girls were thrown off the bridge.
The Trembling Bridge
Another legend says that if someone tells a lie while crossing, the bridge trembles until it brings the liar back down to earth.
Meeting Place for Students
It is also said about the Bridge of Lies in Sibiu that it was a common meeting place for young people studying at the Military Academy. They would meet the girls here, but then would not show up, leaving the young women waiting in vain.
Deceitful Merchants
Another legend states that the bridge was often crossed by merchants who would deceive the locals. When such a merchant was caught, the locals would throw the lying trader off the bridge.
Reality of the Bridge
Beyond the legends, the reality is that the Bridge of Lies is one of the most beautiful, as well as the oldest cast-iron bridge built in Romania.
