Every year, at the end of December, in Agnita, Sibiu County, a celebration documented since 1689 takes place, aimed at driving away the harsh winter and evil spirits. Of Saxon origin, the Lole tradition has been organized in Agnita for over 100 years.
It is said that the Lole were once very noisy and masked characters who were supposed to accompany the procession carrying the chest with the valuable items of each guild. The custom, first held in Agnita, began to spread to other Saxon areas in past centuries; however, in 1872, after the dissolution of the guilds, the Lole tradition started to fade.
After more than 40 years, the custom was revived and subjected to stricter organization:
This is because the tradition states that the Lole manifestation is extremely noisy, involving whip cracking, bells, and other elements.
In 1941, the custom was interrupted again, and with the massive departure of the Saxons from Romania, the tradition began to be adopted by the Romanian population. Thus, in 1969, the tradition was resumed, but only until 1990 when it was interrupted again due to difficult times.
A few years ago, the custom was revived in Agnita, and year by year, the number of Lole is increasing. The celebration is also a great opportunity for those who have left Agnita to return home and reminisce about childhood moments.
