Wildlife and Floral Reserves in Romania

Little is said about the wildlife and floral reserves in Romania, although we have much to be proud of in this regard. One of the lesser-known reserves, which was the star of an Oscar-winning film, *Cold Mountain*, is the one in Reci, Covasna County.

The Reci Reserve

Spanning an area of 34 hectares, the reserve in the floodplain of the Black River is the only one that includes sand dunes, some reaching heights of up to six meters. The stars of this reserve are the dwarf birches, trees with a history that dates back over 14,000 years, from the *Ice Age*.

Given the low temperatures in the area, the following also thrive here:

  • Ferns
  • Banksian pine, a species that can grow up to 25 meters tall and adapts only in areas where the vegetation conditions are extremely harsh.

The Mestecănișul Reserve

The Mestecănișul Reserve in Reci also includes a series of lakes and marshes where you will be surprised to discover a true floral and faunal world, including:

  • Wild water lilies
  • Families of blue frogs
  • And more.

The area became somewhat more known in 2002, the year when the film *Cold Mountain was shot here. Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, and the other actors expressed their amazement at the beauties they found in Transylvania*.
