The Red Tower Castle, painted with the blood of the Turks.
The Castle of Boița
In the village of Boița, Sibiu County, there is a castle that, once seen, will surely remain in your memory for a long time due to its bright red hue. Built in the early 15th century, the fortress at Boița played an important role in the history of Transylvania, especially in the battles against the Ottomans.
The Legend of the Tower
In fact, the legend of this tower is closely tied to the frequent battles with the Ottomans. It is said that after a victory achieved here by the Romanians and Saxons, the tower was painted red with the blood of the Turks to intimidate them. The area was of great significance, being right on the border between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire at that time.
Fortress Design
The entire castle is designed like a true fortress:
- The towers are tall and have narrow shooting windows.
- These are connected to a network of tunnels from the mountain peak to the bed of the Olt River.
- The tunnels were used, of course, during invasions to evacuate women and children.
Visiting Boița
If you reach Boița, don’t forget to visit the cemetery. At the entrance, you will find a large stone book that will remind you that all those buried here are Romanian and Saxon soldiers from all times.
Current Use of the Castle
The castle served as an orphanage from 1917 until 2003, and it is currently a hospital, so visiting it is not possible for tourists. A trip to this place is worth every penny, and the area is extremely rich in landscapes perfect for framing.
