Introduction

In the Făgăraș Land, in the village of Sâmbăta de Jos, you will encounter a place that will be hard to leave. The Stud Farm in Sâmbăta de Jos, located 14 kilometers from Făgăraș, is the only one in Romania where the famous Lipizzaner horses, one of the noblest European breeds, are raised.

History of the Stud Farm

The stud farm was established in 1874 on the grounds of the Brukenthal Castle. Before the outbreak of World War I, the stud farm was moved to Babolna in Hungary, but in 1920 it was reestablished in Sâmbăta de Jos, and today several hundred stallions and mares call this place home.

Activities at the Stud Farm

Here, you can also:

  • Take riding lessons
  • Participate in training courses
  • Enjoy shows and competitions
  • Simply go for a ride as a tourist

Visiting the Castle

Once you arrive here, don’t hesitate to visit the castle built in 1750 by Count Jozsef Brukenthal. Although it is not in the best condition, the woodwork and solid wood floors will still impress you.

Guided Tours and Visiting Hours

Returning to the stud farm, we must tell you that you will have the opportunity to speak with a guide who is willing to explain the different horse breeds present at the Sâmbăta de Jos stud farm.

  • Visiting hours: 10 AM to 4 PM
