Introduction to Fundata

Brașov County is home to a collection of villages, each more breathtaking than the last. Today, we turn our attention to the village of Fundata, considered the seat of the Fundata commune, also located within Brașov County.

Population and Historical Significance

With a population of 464 residents, this small expanse has been included on the list of tourist villages, alongside many other localities, totaling 13. This was, in fact, a simple experiment that began on July 16, 1973. The outcome is regarded as one of real interest, given that currently, the village of Fundata is situated at an altitude of 1,305 meters, which is why it is recognized as the highest village in Romania.

Location

In terms of location, this small locality is found halfway between two major towns, namely Bran and Rucăr, or the Bucegi Mountains and the Piatra Craiului Mountains.

Tourist Attractions

Once you arrive here, the village of Fundata welcomes you with a series of must-visit tourist attractions. The first among these is the Piatra Craiului National Park, along with the multitude of trails leading to Piatra Craiului, the Zărneșilor Cliffs, and the Moieciu and Grădiștea Gorges. A series of other tourist sites include:

  • Dâmbovicioara Cave and Gorge
  • Pecineagu Dam
  • The famous Vidraru Lake
  • The Bat Cave

Memorials and Historical Sites

However, if you wish to enjoy the tourist attractions found in the village of Fundata, it is recommended to guide yourself by the Monument of the Romanian Heroes who sacrificed their lives in World War I. For easier identification, remember that it is located in the courtyard of the dispensary (the only one, in fact), built as a memorial for the hero Gheorghe Poenaru-Bordea.

He gave his life for the homeland during World War I, and today one can observe a moment of silence in his memory at the Heroes' Monument, constructed primarily of stone. Furthermore, there is an inscription referring to the fallen hero for the homeland, created on August 14, 1916, the date when Colonel Gheorghe Poenaru-Bordea passed away, the first to give his life for the good of the country.

Notable Personalities

The village of Fundata is the birthplace of a highly successful personality, namely the birthplace of Silvia Popovici, the esteemed actress who lived from 1933 to 1993. Among those who remain, most are retirees, people who live their lives in the heart of nature and in the heart of our country.

Although it is a small village, Fundata enjoys its well-deserved history and past.
