Introduction to Hoghilag
In Hoghilag, a commune located in the northern part of Sibiu County, just a few kilometers from Sighișoara, the locals produce a homemade wine that manages to linger in the memory of those who taste it for a long time. Known as an area where people have been engaged in viticulture for hundreds of years, an annual wine festival takes place here.
The Annual Wine Festival
The first edition of the festival was held in 2008, and since then, wine producers from all over Sibiu and Mureș counties gather here to showcase their yearly harvest.
Viticulture Tradition
As mentioned, grape cultivation is an ancient tradition in this part of Transylvania. Like many other wine regions in Transylvania, Hoghilag's significance in viticulture lies not in the size of its vineyards but rather in the unique taste and quality of its products. Among the varieties we recommend are:
- Feteasca albă
- Feteasca regală
- Muscat ottonel
Visiting Hoghilag
And if you find yourself in Hoghilag, don’t forget to visit the fortified Evangelical Church, documented since 1332. The church has been engulfed in flames twice, in 1702 and 1724, but was rebuilt each time. To visit, you will need to inquire at the parish house for the keys.
