Folded polenta from Apold and the legend of the horseman
Introduction to Apold
You may have heard of Apold in passing on *Turistintransilvania.com, but it certainly hasn’t told you yet about the folded polenta* that is eaten here, a dish that makes your mouth water even just by writing about it.
Village Life in Apold
In Apold, a village located 16 kilometers from Sighișoara, village life is exactly as it should be in Transylvania:
- With a fortified church that has been watching over the area for over 700 years
- With Saxon houses that are also several hundred years old
- With welcoming and open people eager to share their secrets
So, if you find yourself in Apold, don’t forget to ask for a portion of folded polenta. The specific recipe for this village includes:
- Halves of boiled eggs
- Sheep cheese
- Butter
All are layered like a cake. In the end, it is folded and served that way.
The Legend of Apold
"Old Trap! Old Trap!"
And while you enjoy the warm polenta, we must tell you about the name of the village. About Apold, formerly known as Trapold, the legend says that hundreds of years ago, a horseman passed through the area with a horse named Old. As he urged his horse on, the rider would shout "trap Old, trap Old," which led the locals to name the village as such.
The story that is closer to the truth is related to the Saxons who migrated here several hundred years ago. It is said that they came from the German locality of Oppelshausen and named the village after it.
Visiting the Fortified Church
And before you leave Apold, don't forget to visit the fortified church. Built in the 13th century, the church is still well-preserved. However, the fortification is not as imposing as it once was: from the original height of four meters of the defensive walls, only one meter is visible today.
