The Legend of the Student Tower in Sebes: a story over 500 years old

The Student's Tower in Sebeș

The Student's Tower in Sebeș, also known as the Tailors' Tower, is part of the southeastern enclosure of the fortification in Sebeș. Built in the early 15th century, the tower is associated with a legend that endures to this day.

It is said that in 1438, during the great Ottoman invasions, Sebeș was destroyed by an army led by Sultan Murad II, and the citizens were either killed or enslaved after a fierce battle with the people of Sebeș.

The Legend of the Student

Among the bravest Sebeș residents was a student, known as the student from Romoș. The young man was held captive for 20 years and sold from one master to another. His story appears in several books about Turkish customs and practices from the 15th and 16th centuries. Thus, the people of Sebeș came to name the tower the Student's Tower, an unusual name for medieval fortifications of that time.

Architectural Features

The tower has a base measuring five meters in width, and its walls are one meter thick, constructed from river stone. The tower was built in several stages:

1. The first two levels were equipped with firing openings in the 15th century.
2. The other two levels were completed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
