The Rodna Mountains in Bistrița-Năsăud County hide a series of joys and natural treasures. Located at an altitude of 950 meters, the Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave holds a special place on this list. Since its discovery in 1955, the cave has remained active – more details and much more information regarding this will be easily uncovered in the following.

Visiting the Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave

The Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave can be visited via several routes, among which we highlight three popular trails:

1. The first is based on Bistrița – Năsăud – Salva – Telciu – Valea Telcișorului, leading directly to the cave.
2. The second starts from Bistrița, passes through Năsăud, Rebrișoara, Valea Gersa, Izvorul Tăușoarelor, and then reaches the cave.
3. The last one also departs from Bistrița, goes through Năsăud, Rebrișoara, Rebra, Parva, Valea Izvorul Bârlei, and leads to the cave.

Historical Significance

Historically, the Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave was first observed by a teacher named Leon Barte in 1955, since which time it has undergone numerous explorations. Today, the cave stretches for 19 kilometers, making it one of the longest caves in our country.

Cave Characteristics

From the very beginning, the cave is immense and imposing. Found at over 950 meters, the Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave is situated within the left slope. Compositional-wise, it is part of the Tăușoare – Zalion karst complex, being considered a true natural monument.

Difficulty Level

For the curious, it is essential to mention that the Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave falls into the category of high difficulty due to its immense elevations and the lengths of its chambers. To overcome the imposed obstacles and thus visit it, exceptional physical condition is necessary, along with a well-organized schedule. However, the result will be worth it – for instance, here lies the fossil deposit in the Bear Bones Hall, alongside the Tăușoare Balls, which are considered unique on an international level. Additionally, there is a waterfall with a depth of over 15 meters inside the cave.

Current Status

Unfortunately, in recent years, the Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave has been closed and prohibited to the public or tourism due to the difficulty of traversing it. Nevertheless, from what we know from the past, the beauty of the cave is breathtaking – just like the experience within it. It is up to us to ensure that the outcome is as expected, namely one of genuine interest.
