Banffy Palace: A Historical Gem in Cluj-Napoca

Built in the town of Cluj-Napoca, Banffy Palace is recognized as one of the most remarkable fortifications in the western part of the country. The Art Museum

Etymology and Ownership

Etymologically, Banffy Palace derives its name from the title of "ban" held by several families. On the other hand, starting in 1787, Count Banffy Gyorgy was proclaimed governor of Transylvania, during which time the new palace served as his residence – and not just any residence, but one with dozens of rooms for his use.

Later, after 1822, Count Banffy Gyorgy passed away, and the entire palace was passed down to his children. Starting in 1948, the fortification came under state ownership, and in 1956 it became the home of the National Museum of Art.
