Introduction to Meșendorf

Located in Brașov County, the village of Meșendorf is home to one of the most impressive fortified monuments in the area. The period between the 14th and 16th centuries marks the construction limit of the church, which can still be seen today in the Ensemble of the Evangelical Fortified Church, giving it a grandeur that is well-justified.

Historical Significance

As soon as it was declared a historical monument, the construction began to receive increased attention – we are talking about accelerated tourism due to the significance of the church. Of course, the reason is not surprising, given the spatial-temporal coordinates.

Architectural Evolution

The beginnings of the construction are marked by the 14th century, predominantly in the Romanesque style. Over time, the fortification has gone through various trials and failures, leading to the necessity for restoration shortly thereafter. Thus, the adopted style was Gothic, representative of the period and era in question.

Strategic Features

However, what is commendable for architects and strategists of the time is the connected “zwinger.” Terminologically, this represents a narrow gap situated between two parallel walls, whose significance refers to luring enemies into a trap – for indeed, the primary role for which it was created was that of an obstacle and trap.

Fortification Timeline

Still, if you are wondering when it was truly fortified, the Meșendorf church underwent an extensive process in 1495. Since then, the walls have remained, still imposing, despite the passage of time. From that period, the fortified church took on a different appearance, having been annexed with:

  • A wooden defensive structure
  • The choir
  • The nave that were not present before this year

Changes Over Time

A few centuries later, the initial works collapsed, and in the 19th century, the church gates were demolished. However, the only structure that remains intact to this day is the medieval tower.

Current State

Today, only two towers are still preserved. For the most part, the wall was demolished back in 1888 to create land for the construction of a school. However, there are not only these technical stories to tell about the fortified church of Meșendorf, as its interior is much more attractive – we are talking about:

  • Baroque paintings
  • A triptych altar dating from 1693
  • All harmonized by a Wegenstein organ from 1914

Unique Features

Time seems meticulously calculated, thanks to the hourglass inside which there is a collection of four glass cylinders, used to measure the service by the priest – and not only.
